Creating a Sunrise and Sunset DIY with Govee Lights

Hey everyone! I’m really excited to share my latest project with you all. After a year and a half of experimenting with various smart home devices, I’ve finally dipped my toe into the world of smart lighting with Govee products. It’s been a journey of trial and error, but I’m here to ask for your help in taking it to the next level. For those who don’t know me, I’ve been building a smart home on a budget, relying heavily on Govee devices connected to the Amazon IoT network. My setup includes smart appliances, plugs, and even some dumb appliances that I’ve managed to integrate into my system. I’ve also been using IFTTT to create some pretty convoluted (but reliable) automations. My latest addition? Three Govee H6008 bulbs. While I’m thrilled to have lights that can change colors, I’m looking to take things further. My Holy Grail of smart home projects is creating a DIY sunrise and sunset simulation. The concept is simple—mimicking the gradual transition from daylight to darkness or vice versa—but executing it elegantly and reliably isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. I’ve already started experimenting with grouping the bulbs together and stealing colors from a perfect sunset I found online, but the real challenge lies in programming the bulbs to cycle through these colors smoothly. Here’s what I’m hoping to achieve: - A sunset (or sunrise) that lasts about 15 minutes and can be triggered manually. - A gradual transition through various colors, with tiny changes every few seconds and noticeable differences each minute. - The ability to extend or shorten specific parts of the transition. - User control options, like stopping and restarting the simulation mid-process. - Compatibility with all full-spectrum smart lights in my apartment, or at least in one room. I’m also curious about how others have approached this. Have there been successful DIY projects similar to what I’m envisioning? Are there theoretical discussions or brainstorming sessions I should check out? I’m open to any ideas, whether they’re about color transitions, timing, triggers, or user control mechanisms. To give you a sense of where I am now, I’ve grouped the three bulbs together and given the DIY a title. Beyond that, it’s all about figuring out how to get the bulbs to cycle through the colors I’ve selected. It’s a lot to take in, but I’m determined to make it happen. Any links, ideas, or suggestions would be incredibly helpful! I’m looking forward to hearing from you all and learning from your experiences. Let’s make this sunrise and sunset simulation a reality! Beakly yours, Gonzo
