I recently switched from SmartThings to Hubitat and have been exploring its capabilities. One feature I was particularly interested in was creating a virtual group of lights, similar to how I managed my Living Room lights in SmartThings. In SmartThings, this was straightforward with a Virtual Device, but I wanted to understand how Hubitat handles this. After some research and experimentation, I discovered that Hubitat allows for both Virtual Devices and Groups, but they serve slightly different purposes. I decided to create a Group of my Living Room lights to control them as a single entity. This was surprisingly simple and has made my Alexa commands much more efficient—now I can just say, ‘Alexa, turn on the Living Room lights,’ and all of them respond. One challenge I faced was ensuring the Group worked seamlessly with my existing routines and automations. I found that by properly configuring the Group settings and testing each light individually, I could avoid any hiccups. I also explored the possibility of creating a Virtual Device for more advanced scenarios, but for my current setup, the Group feature suffices perfectly. For anyone looking to consolidate multiple lights into a single command, I highly recommend exploring both Virtual Devices and Groups in Hubitat. It’s a great way to simplify your smart home setup and enhance your daily routines. Happy automating! ![]()
