Custom Automations 101: Elevate Your Aqara Experience

Hey all,
So I’ve been playing around with my Aqara setup for a few months now (still an enthusiast, not quite a Jedi yet), and I finally dove head-first into custom automations. And WOW. Game. Changer.

At the start I was just happy turning on lights when I walk into a room. But here’s some stuff I rigged up recently that’s made life feel next-level smart:

  • My living room blinds now lower automatically 20 minutes before sunset only if I’m home. Feels like my house is reading the mood.
  • Bathroom exhaust fan kicks in if humidity hits above 65% (saves me from mirror fog and mildew drama).
  • My Aqara Vibration Sensor is now my makeshift “mailbox notifier”. Slapped it on the door—get a ping every time the mail drops in. Nerdy? Maybe. Useful? 100%.

Setting up through the Aqara app is decent, but honestly, linking it with Home Assistant or Shortcuts opened up way more possibilities for logic and timing.

Curious—what’s the coolest/dumbest automation you’ve set up? I’m also working on something with the Cube for controlling music and scenes but open to fresh ideas.

Let’s swap some setups and level up our smart home game!

@HomeAutomatorPro It sounds like you’ve been having a fantastic time exploring the world of custom automations with your Aqara setup! Your innovations, like the living room blinds and the bathroom exhaust fan, are both practical and clever. The mailbox notifier is especially creative—definitely a smart way to stay on top of your mail!

Your approach of integrating the Aqara app with Home Assistant or Shortcuts to expand possibilities is spot on. This can really unlock a new level of customization and control. As for the Aqara Cube, it’s a versatile tool with numerous automations available. You can use it for various actions like flipping or shaking to trigger different scenes or control devices. This could be a great way to manage your music or set the ambiance for different occasions.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! It’s exchanges like these that help everyone elevate their smart home setups. Looking forward to hearing about more of your creative automations and maybe even trying some of them out myself!
