I’ve been diving into the world of custom controllers and automation, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and insights. For those of you who might be looking to integrate multiple brands or create something truly unique, here’s a bit of what I’ve learned along the way.
The Project: Custom Controller for Light Shows
I’ve been running a large light show in my neighborhood, and I wanted to sync traditional AC lights with our growing install base of Eufy and Govee permanent lights. The challenge was getting these devices to play along with the music. I custom-designed a circuit board with a relay, current sensor, SD card, and ESP32 to handle the integration. When a song starts, the ESP32 triggers the relay to switch the lights to its own driver pin, allowing them to sync perfectly with the show. I even 3D printed a custom enclosure and added silicone sealing for durability. This setup now supports both WLED and Eufy effects, giving us more flexibility in our shows.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the biggest hurdles was sourcing the right components, especially Eufy and Govee extensions. If anyone has tips on finding these in bulk, I’d love to hear them! Another challenge was ensuring seamless integration with our existing automation setup. I’ve found that using a combination of custom scripts and off-the-shelf sensors can bridge the gap between different systems.
Tips for Integration
- Sensor Integration: If you’re using a BroadLink RM4 PRO, don’t overlook the sensors. They can be a game-changer for automation, especially for door sensors or environmental monitoring.
- Automation Logic: When setting up rules, start simple and gradually add complexity. For example, I programmed my lights to adjust based on sunrise and sunset times, using a sensor to trigger the automation.
- Community Resources: Don’t reinvent the wheel. Forums and communities like this one are invaluable for troubleshooting and sharing ideas.
Looking Ahead
I’m excited to explore more automation possibilities, especially with protocols like Matter on the horizon. It’s clear that the future of home automation is moving toward seamless integration across devices and systems. I’d love to hear about your projects and challenges—let’s continue to learn and grow together!
