I recently stumbled upon a neat customization feature in my smart home setup, and I just had to share it with the community! ![]()
I’ve been using a door switch that defaults to showing “open” and “closed” statuses in the SmartThings app. While it works perfectly, I wanted something a bit more intuitive for my specific use case. After some digging, I found out that it’s actually possible to rename these statuses to something like “full” and “empty”! ![]()

Here’s how I did it:
- Identify the Device: Locate your door switch in the SmartThings app.
- Access Settings: Go into the device settings and look for any customization options.
- Rename Statuses: Found under the “advanced settings,” I was able to change the status labels from “open”/“closed” to “full”/“empty.”
- Test It Out: After saving the changes, I tested it by opening and closing the door. The status updated perfectly with the new labels!

This little tweak has made my daily interactions with the app much smoother. Instead of mentally translating “open” to “empty,” it’s now immediately clear what the status means. ![]()
If anyone else is looking to customize their device statuses, I highly recommend exploring the settings menu. You might be surprised by what you can change! ![]()
