Hi everyone, I recently faced an interesting challenge with my freezer. Typically, we don’t store much meat, but during the pandemic, I built up a full freezer. Unfortunately, someone left the door partially open, and we ended up losing some items. To prevent this from happening again, I decided to use my Home Assistant setup to detect if the door wasn’t properly closed.
I have some spare Iris V1 and V2 sensors, which can read temperature. I’m considering using one of these to monitor the freezer door. The ideal solution would notify me only if the door wasn’t closed, rather than every time it’s opened.
I also have a Centralite water sensor and an Iris V2 keypad, though I’m not sure if the keypad reads temperature. The freezer is an upright model, so signal strength inside the metal cabinet might be an issue. I think placing a Zigbee or Z-Wave sensor within a few feet could help with signal strength.
I’m open to using what I already have, but if it saves my freezer full of food, I’m also open to buying a new sensor. If anyone has tips or suggestions, I’d really appreciate it! Cheers, Mac
