Hey everyone, I’ve been diving into the world of home automation and it’s been a fantastic journey so far! I’ve managed to set up quite a few devices around my home, from smart lights to thermostats, and I’m really enjoying the convenience they bring. However, there’s one challenge I’ve been trying to tackle and I thought I’d share my experiences and ask for your insights.
I’ve been experimenting with creating automations that adjust my home’s settings based on whether I’m present or not. For instance, I’d love for the lights to dim and the thermostat to adjust slightly when I’m away, and then revert back when I’m home. It sounds straightforward, but getting the detection right has been a bit tricky.
I’ve read about using Wi-Fi presence as a trigger, which makes sense since my phone is almost always connected to the home network. I’ve set up a rule where if my phone disconnects from the Wi-Fi, it assumes I’m away. While this works most of the time, there are occasional false triggers, especially when my phone is in a dead spot or if I’m just stepping out for a quick errand. I’ve also considered using motion sensors, but I’m not sure how reliable they’d be, especially with pets around the house.
I stumbled upon the Smart Presence app, which seems promising. It allows me to set up geofences around my home and trigger automations based on my location. I’ve started using it, and so far, it’s been pretty accurate. However, I’m curious if there are other methods or devices that people have found to be more reliable. Maybe something that combines multiple detection methods to ensure accuracy?
I’d love to hear how others have tackled this challenge. Do you rely solely on one method, or do you use a combination of sensors and apps? Have you found any particular device or service that stands out for detecting presence? I’m all ears for any tips or tricks that could help refine my setup!
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions. It’s amazing how a community like this can help us all improve our smart homes!
