Dimming LED Lights with Homematic: A Smooth Experience

Hello everyone! I’ve been exploring the world of smart lighting lately, and I wanted to share my experience with dimming LED lights using Homematic. It’s been quite a journey, but I’ve managed to find a setup that works perfectly for my needs.[:)]

First, I was torn between choosing Homematic (HM) and Homematic IP (HMIP). HMIP seemed like the obvious choice due to its ease of use and modern features. However, I stumbled upon a bit of a snag: HMIP doesn’t offer a PWM dimmer, only a phase-cut dimmer (HmIP-FDT). This was a bit concerning because I wanted to replace my outdated neon tubes with dimmable LED strips, and I knew that dimming LEDs on the 230V side can be tricky.

After some research, I discovered that using a PWM dimmer (like the HM-LC-Dim1PWM-CV) for 12/24V LED strips was the way to go. Unfortunately, this dimmer is only available for CCU2-controlled Homematic, not HMIP. This was a bit of a setback, but I didn’t want to abandon my plans. I decided to explore other options and found that some LED strips can be dimmed via phase-cut dimmers like the HmIP-FDT. This meant I could still achieve smooth dimming without having to switch back to HM.

I reached out to the community for recommendations on LED strips that work well with phase-cut dimmers. Many users suggested brands like Osram and Philips, emphasizing the importance of choosing strips specifically designed for dimming. I settled on a high-quality 12V LED strip, which I paired with a reliable power supply and the HmIP-FDT dimmer. The results have been fantastic—no flickering, smooth transitions, and consistent performance.

I also wanted to share a tip for anyone looking to set up similar lighting: always test your LED strips with the dimmer before committing to installation. This simple step can save a lot of hassle and ensure that everything works as expected.[:)]

In summary, while the lack of a PWM dimmer in HMIP was initially frustrating, it led me to explore alternative solutions that have worked out beautifully. I’m now enjoying dimmable LED lighting in my home, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. If anyone has questions or needs advice on setting up similar systems, feel free to reach out—I’d be happy to help![:)]
