DIY Dalek Light Installation - A Doctor Who Fan’s Project
As a huge Doctor Who fan, I couldn’t resist creating a DIY Dalek-themed light installation for my home. It’s been a fun project that combines my love for retro sci-fi with the practicality of smart lighting. Here’s how I brought this project to life!
The Concept
I wanted something that could serve as both a decorative piece and a functional light source. The Dalek design seemed perfect—iconic and instantly recognizable. I decided to use LED strip lights to create the glowing effect and added some motion sensors to make it interactive.
The Build
- Materials: I used LED strip lights, a motion sensor module, a small power supply, and some plywood to create the Dalek’s body. I also added some retro-style knobs and buttons for that authentic Doctor Who look.
- Assembly: The base was constructed using plywood, and I carefully painted it to resemble the Dalek’s metallic exterior. The LED strips were placed strategically to highlight the Dalek’s features.
- Smart Integration: I connected the LED strips to a smart switch and integrated it into my Home Assistant setup. The motion sensor triggers the lights, making it activate when someone enters the room—a fun way to greet visitors!
The Outcome
The result is stunning! The Dalek light installation adds a unique touch to my living room, and it’s a conversation starter whenever friends come over. The motion-activated feature adds an interactive element, making it more engaging.
