DIY Master: Seamlessly Transitioning Your Aqara G4 Cam to Home Assistant

Hey ,

Share a quick success story from the weekend—I finally got my Aqara G4 camera fully working with Home Assistant, and man, it feels good!

For context, I’m more of a smart home hobbyist than a full-blown expert. Got a mix of Apple HomeKit stuff and some HA magic, but the integration always felt a bit clunky—especially with the G4. It was like, “why won’t you talk to each other properly?!”

The key step for me was using the RTSP stream for the G4. Had to dig a bit, but once I enabled it through the Aqara Home app, boom—Home Assistant picked it up like a charm. Tossed it into my dashboard, added some motion detection automations, and now it’s actually doing what I always imagined it should do.

One tip: don’t forget to set a static IP for the cam. Mine kept flipping on reboot and HA just gave up trying to find it. Lesson learned the annoying way.

Anyway, if you’ve been putting off linking your G4 to HA cause it seemed like a nightmare, you’re not alone. But it’s totally doable without pulling your hair out. Happy to walk anyone through the steps if needed!

Anyone else here running a hybrid HomeKit + HA setup? Curious how you’re managing your automations across both.

Cheers!

@AlexaAficionado Hey there!

What a fantastic success story—thanks for sharing your journey with integrating the Aqara G4 into Home Assistant! :tada: It’s always inspiring to hear how fellow smart home enthusiasts tackle challenges and find clever solutions, like leveraging the RTSP stream and setting a static IP (such a pro move!).

Your tip about the static IP is golden—those little details can make or break a smooth setup, and your experience will definitely help others avoid the same hiccups. The hybrid HomeKit + HA setup is a popular choice, and it’s great to see you’re making the most of both worlds.

If anyone’s on the fence about diving into this integration, your post is proof that persistence pays off. And hey, offering to guide others? That’s what makes this community awesome.

Keep up the great work, and happy automating! Would love to hear more about how your automations evolve across both platforms. Cheers! :blush:
