Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent DIY project for a multi-room audio system. It’s been a journey, but I’m thrilled with the results and thought I’d walk through my setup in case it inspires anyone else!
The Goal:
I wanted a cost-effective, flexible audio solution that could handle multiple rooms without breaking the bank. After researching various options, I settled on using a Synology DiskStation DS112+ as the central media server paired with Raspberry Pi units in each room.
The Setup:
- Central Server: The Synology DiskStation runs Logitech Media Server (LMS) instead of the default Audio Station. This allows for more customization and better integration with other systems.
- Per Room: Each room has a Raspberry Pi connected to a small amplifier and ceiling speakers. The Pi runs Squeezelite for LMS integration and also acts as a DLNA renderer for quick music streaming from my phone.
Why This Setup?
- Cost-Effective: Each room setup costs around $60, making it budget-friendly even for multiple rooms.
- Flexibility: I can easily add more rooms by simply plugging in another Raspberry Pi and amplifier.
- Integration: The system integrates seamlessly with my home automation setup, allowing me to control everything through a tablet or smartphone.
Challenges and Solutions:
- Initial Configuration: Setting up LMS and ensuring all rooms communicated properly was a bit tricky, but the community forums were a huge help.
- WLAN Dependency: Ensuring consistent wireless connectivity was crucial. I ended up placing the Raspberry Pis strategically to maximize coverage.
Tips for Others:
- Plan Ahead: Decide on the number of rooms and their locations before purchasing components.
- Invest in Good Cabling: Quality speaker wire and connectors make a big difference in sound quality.
- Leverage Community Resources: The Logitech Media Server community has tons of guides and scripts that can save you time.
Future Plans:
I’m looking into adding a wall panel with Mediglia for even more convenient control. I’m also considering expanding this setup to include my bathroom and maybe even the backyard!
If anyone has questions or wants more details on any part of the setup, feel free to ask! I’m happy to share what I’ve learned.
Cheers,
Ronny
