DIY Occupancy Indicator for Bathroom Door

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently completed for my smart home setup. I’ve always wanted an occupancy indicator for my bathroom door to show when it’s occupied, but I didn’t have any power source near the door. After some brainstorming, I came up with a creative solution using a 5V LED Zigbee stripe and some 3D printing magic!

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Materials Needed: I used a 5V LED Zigbee stripe with 15 LEDs, a 3D printer, and an 18650 battery. The total cost was under €10, which is super budget-friendly!

  2. Assembly Process: I programmed the LED stripe to display a simple ‘OCCUPIED’ message. Then, I designed and printed a small housing for the LED and battery. It was a bit tricky getting the housing to fit perfectly, but after a few iterations, it looked great!

  3. Integration: Since the LED stripe is Zigbee-enabled, it seamlessly integrates with my existing smart home ecosystem. I set up a simple automation so that the light turns on automatically when the bathroom door is closed.

  4. Cost Breakdown: The LED stripe cost €4.69, and the battery-powered housing was €2.69. It’s an affordable project that adds a nice touch of functionality to my home.

I’m really happy with how this turned out! It’s a small project, but it makes a big difference in daily convenience. Plus, it was a great way to recycle some old 3D printing filament. If anyone has questions or wants more details, feel free to ask!

Cheers,
