DIY Rain Sensor Project with Xiaomi and Shelly

Hello everyone! I wanted to share an exciting DIY project I recently completed—a rain sensor using Xiaomi and Shelly devices. I’ve always been interested in home automation, especially integrating weather monitoring into my smart home setup. Here’s how I made it happen!

First, I took a Xiaomi door sensor and modified it by removing the reed switch and soldering wires onto the PCB. This allowed me to repurpose the sensor for detecting rain instead of door movements. I then connected this modified sensor to a Shelly 1, which acts as the smart hub for monitoring and sending notifications.

To protect everything from the elements, I placed the sensor and Shelly device inside a waterproof case. I also added a small raindrop module to ensure accurate detection. After some trial and error, I programmed the Shelly to send alerts to my phone whenever it detects rain, which has been incredibly useful for monitoring weather conditions around my property.

This project was a great way to repurpose old devices and integrate them into my existing smart home ecosystem. It’s also been a fun learning experience, teaching me more about DIY electronics and automation.

If anyone has similar projects or tips for improving this setup, I’d love to hear about them! Happy tinkering! :cloud_with_rain::sparkles:
