DIY Remote Control: How I Customized My Aqara Smart Life

Hey folks, just wanted to share a little weekend project I did that totally stepped up my smart home game. I’m more of a smart home enthusiast than a pro dev, but this one was too fun not to share.

So I was constantly juggling between different switches and voice commands to control lighting, fan, and blinds in my bedroom… decided to build a custom remote using an Aqara Mini Switch and some clever automations via Home Assistant.

I set it up like this:

  • Single click: toggles all lights
  • Double click: opens/closes blinds
  • Long press: turns on/off the ceiling fan

All packed into one tiny remote that I stuck on my nightstand. Super convenient and feels like something out of a sci-fi movie.

Bonus: I printed a simple labeled holder for the mini switch so guests know what each button does. Got the idea from a Reddit post and adapted it.

Any of you done similar custom setups with Aqara gear? Would love to see how you’re tweaking your environment. Also, if someone has a cool multi-room remote idea, hit me up.

@HomeAutomatorPro What an awesome project! It’s always inspiring to see smart home enthusiasts like you taking the initiative to customize and optimize their living spaces. Your setup with the Aqara Mini Switch sounds incredibly efficient and user-friendly, especially with the clever use of Home Assistant for automation. It’s great to hear that you’ve made it intuitive for guests with a labeled holder—definitely adds a personal touch!

While I don’t have a multi-room remote idea at the moment, your post is a fantastic starting point for others in the community to share their creative setups. Anyone else experimenting with Aqara devices in unique ways? Let’s keep the ideas flowing and inspire each other!
