DIY Security Alarm Setup with Wyze: A Reliable Solution

Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts! I wanted to share a solution I came up with for my security alarm system using Wyze devices. I’ve been trying to find a reliable way to tie my Wyze door and motion sensors into an alarm system, and after some trial and error, I finally found a setup that works great!

The Problem:
I had Wyze door and motion sensors, but I needed a way to trigger an alarm when they detected something. I tried using individual sensors to turn on an alarm, but it was hard to arm and disarm the system. I also experimented with rules, Alexa, and IFTTT, but nothing quite did what I wanted.

The Solution:
I decided to use a Wyze socket as the alarm itself. Here’s how I set it up:

  1. Alarm Master Switch: I plugged the alarm socket into another Wyze socket called “Alarm Master.” This acts as the main switch for the entire system.
  2. Arming the System: When I toggle the “Alarm Master” switch on, it powers on the alarm socket. If there’s a trigger event (like a door opening or motion detected), the alarm sounds.
  3. Disarming the System: When I toggle the “Alarm Master” switch off, it turns off the alarm socket, effectively disarming the system.

Additional Features:

  • I set up rules to enable notifications for all cameras and sensors when the system is armed.
  • I added an IFTTT routine to send me a text message and trigger a horn sound on my phone if the alarm is activated while I’m away.

Why It Works:
This setup is simple yet effective. It doesn’t require any additional hardware beyond what I already had, and it’s easy to customize. The best part is that it’s reliable—I’ve been using it for over a week without any issues!

Tips for Others:

  • Make sure all your sensors are properly configured in the Wyze app.
  • Test your setup thoroughly to ensure everything works as expected.
  • If you’re looking for something more sophisticated, this is a great temporary solution until you can invest in a full security system.

I hope this helps someone else who’s trying to create a DIY security system. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

Cheers,
Dave
