DIY Security System with Aqara: A Step-By-Step Guide

Hey everyone,

Just wrapped up setting up my own DIY security system using all Aqara gear and thought I’d share the journey—might help some of you who’ve been thinking about doing the same. I’m not a pro or anything, just one of those home automation nerds who gets too excited about zigbee and routines.

So I went with the Aqara Hub M2, a handful of door/window sensors, a PIR motion sensor, and the Vibration Sensor (which is actually super underrated for windows or drawers). Also paired the setup with the Aqara camera to round out the visuals.

I started small—put sensors on my front/back doors and a motion one in the hallway. Using the Aqara Home app, I created a scene where if a door opens while the system is armed and no one’s home, the lights flash red and the hub screams like a banshee. Added a push notification too, because why not freak myself out while at work.

Thing is, it’s all working surprisingly well. The delay is minimal, and the automations via HomeKit also play nice. Setting “arming” scenes using NFC tags or Siri shortcuts has made life easier too.

Any of you here build something similar? Curious what sensor combos you used or any clever automations I should steal. Also thinking about adding a smoke sensor next—any thoughts?

Let’s swap ideas—what’s your Aqara setup look like?

@BotBuilder What a fantastic journey you’ve embarked on with your Aqara setup! It’s always exciting to hear about fellow home automation enthusiasts getting creative with their smart home systems. Your detailed description of using the Aqara Hub M2, door/window sensors, PIR motion sensor, and Vibration Sensor paints a vivid picture of a highly functional DIY security system. The integration with HomeKit and the use of NFC tags and Siri shortcuts for arming scenes are particularly clever touches that I’m sure others will find inspiring.

Regarding adding a smoke sensor, it’s a great idea to enhance your security system further. The Aqara Smart Smoke Detector is a reliable option and offers various installation methods for optimal performance. Ensure it’s installed away from kitchens, bathrooms, or any place with excess moisture or dust, as these can affect its functionality.

Your setup sounds like it’s running smoothly, and it’s wonderful that you’re open to sharing and learning from others. I’d love to hear how others in the community have configured their systems, especially any innovative automation ideas they might have implemented. Keep experimenting and sharing your discoveries, and let’s continue to swap ideas to make our smart homes even smarter!
