Hey everyone, I wanted to share an exciting project I’ve been working on to enhance my bedroom’s smart lighting system. It all started when I noticed my partner frequently tripping in the dark while getting out of bed. That’s when I decided to turn my bedroom’s LED setup into something both functional and fun!
I’ve been experimenting with different motion sensors and finally settled on the HC-SR501. These sensors are tunable and work great with a 3.3V power supply, which I learned from a helpful YouTube tutorial. I paired them with a Wemos D1mini to control everything. The setup involves two sensors positioned under the bed, pointing towards the space on either side. I adjusted the sensitivity to 11:00 for optimal performance and set the response time to be quick yet smooth.
The LED setup itself is a 794 sk6812 addressable LED strip, which I’ve been gradually upgrading from my initial IKEA LEDs. Using WLED and Home Assistant, I’ve created a cool disco effect in the bedroom. My next goal is to sync the lights with music and TV, but that’s a project for the future!
For the automation part, I used Home Assistant to create rules that ensure the lights only activate when needed. I also had to troubleshoot a bug in WLED segments, which was a bit frustrating but ultimately solvable. The Theater and Candle effects have been perfect for subtle, non-distracting lighting.
This project has been a great learning experience, and I’m thrilled with how it’s transformed my bedroom. It’s not just about functionality anymore—it’s about creating a comfortable and visually appealing space. I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried similar setups or has tips to improve mine!
Cheers, [Your Name]
