I’ve been on a journey to modernize my home’s lighting system, and I’m thrilled to share my latest project—a DIY smart dimmer switch using Sonoff and ESPeasy. This project has been a labor of love, blending traditional dimming experiences with the convenience of smart home integration. 
Why I Did It
I’ve always loved the feel of a dimmer switch, but modern smart bulbs offer so much more. I wanted to keep the tactile experience for my family while reaping the benefits of smart lighting. Plus, I wanted to avoid the complexity of traditional smart switches.
The Components
- Sonoff Basic: A reliable and affordable base.
- KY-040 Rotary Encoder: For precise dimming control.
- Dupont Cables and Headers: For connecting everything neatly.
- ESPEasy: The perfect platform for configuring without coding.
The Setup
- Hardware Assembly: I soldered the encoder to the Sonoff, ensuring a snug fit. Trimming the casing was a bit tricky, but it was worth it for a seamless look.
- Software Configuration: ESPeasy made it straightforward to map the encoder’s inputs to MQTT commands for my smart bulbs.
- Testing: I created a short demo video to ensure everything worked smoothly before installation.
Challenges and Solutions
- Space Constraints: The Sonoff was a tight fit, but careful trimming made it work.
- Long Press Functionality: I’m still tweaking this to toggle between different lighting modes. Any advice is welcome!
