DIY Smart Light Switch Modification Success Story

I wanted to share my recent success with modifying a set of inexpensive WiFi smart dimmer switches from Costco. After some research, I decided to give the Feit Electric WiFi dimmers a try, especially since they came in a 3-pack for under $15 each. The goal was to replace some aging Insteon switches in my home while keeping costs low.

The process wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, I tried using the Tuya-Convert method to flash the devices with Tasmota firmware, but unfortunately, these newer units seemed to have a patch that prevented OTA updates. However, I wasn’t ready to give up! After some digging, I found that it was still possible to flash the devices using a wired method. This involved carefully desoldering the TYWE2S chip, soldering wires to the necessary pins, and using an FTDI dongle to flash the Tasmota firmware manually.

The entire process was a bit intimidating at first, but with some patience and careful soldering, it turned out to be manageable. I was thrilled when the devices finally showed up as Tasmota access points and could be configured through the SmartThings app. I even wrote a basic device handler for them to ensure seamless integration with my existing smart home setup.

What’s truly impressive is how well these modified switches are performing. They’ve been rock solid since installation, and the dimming functionality works perfectly. For under $15 each, it’s hard to find a better deal for such reliable smart switches!

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried similar modifications or has tips for working with these types of devices. It’s amazing how a little DIY effort can turn budget hardware into something truly functional and useful. Happy hacking everyone! :rocket:
