DIY Smart Lighting Automation Project

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent DIY smart lighting automation project—it’s been a fantastic journey! :star2:

I’ve always loved the idea of having my lights automatically adjust based on my routines and preferences. After some research, I decided to create a system that integrates motion sensors, daylight sensors, and smart bulbs. The goal was to have lights that turn on when I enter a room, adjust brightness based on natural light, and dim to a cozy level in the evenings.

Here’s a quick overview of what I did:

  1. Motion Sensors: I installed motion sensors in my living room, hallway, and bathroom. These detect movement and trigger the lights to turn on. I set a timeout so the lights stay on for a few minutes after the last motion detected.

  2. Daylight Sensors: To complement the motion sensors, I added daylight sensors near the windows. These adjust the brightness of the bulbs based on the available natural light. It’s amazing how smooth the transition is from bright daylight to softer evening lighting!

  3. Smart Bulbs: I chose a set of smart bulbs that support color temperature and brightness adjustments. Pairing these with the sensors allowed me to create a seamless lighting experience throughout the day.

  4. Automation Rules: Using my smart home platform, I set up rules to tie everything together. For example:

  • Lights dim to 30% at sunset and gradually increase to 100% as it gets darker outside.
  • In the morning, lights start brightening 15 minutes before my wake-up time to simulate a sunrise effect.
  • When I leave the house, all lights turn off except for a nightlight in the hallway.

The results have been incredible! I’ve noticed a significant reduction in energy usage, and the convenience factor is unbeatable. No more fumbling for switches in the dark, and my home feels more welcoming and comfortable.

If you’re thinking about a similar project, here are some tips:

  • Start small—maybe just one room—and expand as you get comfortable.
  • Test your sensors and bulbs in different lighting conditions to ensure they work as expected.
  • Don’t hesitate to tweak your automation rules over time to better suit your lifestyle.

I’d love to hear about your smart lighting setups or any tips you might have! :rocket:
