DIY Smart Lighting Project & Automation Setup

Hey everyone, I wanted to share an exciting DIY project I recently completed in my home! I’ve been wanting to upgrade my lighting setup for a while now, and I finally took the plunge with some Govee smart lights. Let me walk you through my journey and some tips I picked up along the way. ### The Project: Smart LED Light Strips I decided to go with Govee H7086 outdoor garden lights for my backyard. They were on sale at Walmart for $10 each, which was a great deal! I set them up around my garden and along the patio. The installation was pretty straightforward—just plug them into the power adapter and connect them to my Wi-Fi using the Govee app. What I love most about these lights is their versatility. They support RGBWWIC technology, which means I can create almost any color or white light setting I want. Plus, they’re IP66 waterproof, so I don’t have to worry about them getting damaged by rain or snow. ### The Automation Setup To really make these lights smart, I wanted to integrate them into my existing home automation setup. I use IFTTT and the Google Home app for most of my automations, so I decided to go with those tools. Here’s what I set up: 1. Sunrise & Sunset Modes: I programmed the lights to automatically turn on at sunset and gradually dim as the night goes on. In the morning, they slowly brighten again to mimic a sunrise. This has been such a nice touch—it feels like the lights are part of the natural flow of the day. 2. Motion Sensor Integration: I added a motion sensor to the mix so that the lights brighten fully when someone walks into the garden. It’s perfect for late-night trips to the backyard or entertaining guests. 3. Voice Control: I set up voice commands through Google Home so I can easily adjust the lights from anywhere in the house. For example, I can say, “Hey Google, turn on the garden lights” or “Hey Google, set the lights to party mode.” ### Tips & Tricks - App Customization: The Govee app allows for a lot of customization. I created several preset scenes for different occasions—like a relaxing evening mode, a festive holiday mode, and a bright daytime mode. - Scheduling: I highly recommend setting up schedules for your lights. It takes the hassle out of manually turning them on and off, and it ensures they’re always running when you need them. - Battery-Life Hacks: For any outdoor devices, make sure they’re properly sealed and protected from the weather. I also recommend using a good-quality power adapter to ensure consistent performance. ### Future Plans This project was such a success that I’m already planning to expand it! I want to add more lights to the front porch and maybe even integrate some smart speakers for outdoor music. If anyone has tips or suggestions for taking this project to the next level, I’d love to hear them! It’s been so rewarding to see how much these lights have transformed my backyard, and I can’t wait to see what I can do next. Cheers to DIY projects and smart home automation! :star2:
