DIY Smart Pet Bowl Lighting Setup!

Hey everyone! I’ve been really into DIY projects lately, especially when it comes to making my home a bit smarter and more personalized. I wanted to share a fun project I’ve been working on that combines both DIY creativity and smart home tech. :rocket:

The Goal:
I wanted to create a cool lighting setup for my pet’s food bowl. My cat Siamese loves his food, and I thought it would be fun to make his feeding area more engaging with some colorful LED lights. Plus, it’s a great way to add a little personality to my kitchen!

The Setup:
I decided to use a Govee 16.4ft LED Strip and a Govee Night Light Stick for this project. The LED strip would provide the main lighting, while the Night Light Stick would add some extra flair and color transitions. I also used a Govee Flex Rope to mount the LED strip neatly around the bowl area.

The Process:

  1. Planning the Layout: I measured the area around the bowl and decided on the best way to mount the LED strip. The Flex Rope was perfect for this since it’s easy to shape and secure without damaging the surface.
  2. Mounting the LED Strip: I carefully attached the Flex Rope to the LED strip and shaped it around the bowl. This gave me a sleek, cable-free look that also hides the wiring neatly.
  3. Setting Up the Night Light Stick: I placed the Night Light Stick nearby to add some ambient lighting. It’s been a hit with Siamese—he loves watching the colors cycle!
  4. Automation Fun: I set up a simple automation in Home Assistant so that the lights turn on when the bowl is filled. It’s such a small touch, but it makes me smile every time!

The Results:
I must say, the outcome exceeded my expectations! The LED strip lights up the bowl beautifully, and Siamese seems to really enjoy the colorful glow. It’s also a fun way to keep track of his feeding schedule without constantly checking the camera.

Tips for Others:

  • Measure Twice: Make sure to plan your layout carefully to avoid any awkward wiring or placement issues.
  • Use the Right Tools: The Flex Rope was a game-changer for hiding wires and creating a clean look.
  • Experiment with Colors: Don’t be afraid to play around with different color settings and automations to find what works best for you and your pets!

This project was a great way to dip my toes into DIY smart home projects, and I’m already brainstorming my next one! If anyone has similar ideas or tips, I’d love to hear them.
