DIY Toilet Usage Monitor with Aqara Vibration Sensor

Hey everyone, I’ve got an interesting DIY project to share that combines creativity with smart home technology. Let me walk you through how I transformed an Aqara vibration sensor into a toilet usage monitor, complete with statistics and fun alerts.

Project Background

After a recent home renovation, I wanted to make the most of the new wiring installed throughout the house. One quirky idea that came to mind was monitoring the usage of our toilets. While it might sound a bit odd at first, it turned out to be a fun and practical project!

The Setup

I decided to use an Aqara vibration sensor, which I had lying around. The plan was to attach it to the water tank of our toilet. Every time the toilet flushes, it creates vibrations that the sensor can detect. Simple yet effective!

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Mounting the Sensor: I carefully attached the sensor to the underside of the water tank using double-sided tape. This position ensures it picks up the vibrations from each flush.
  2. Creating Variables: I set up two variables in my smart home system—one to count the number of flushes per month and another for the annual total. These variables feed into a virtual device created using Device Capabilities.
  3. Adding Fun Alerts: To make it more engaging, I programmed the system to trigger fun sounds like applause or a ‘Zonk’ effect every time the toilet is flushed. It adds a playful touch and keeps the family entertained!

Challenges and Solutions

  • False Triggers: Initially, I was concerned about false triggers from other vibrations in the bathroom. However, the sensor proved to be sensitive enough to distinguish between actual flushes and minor vibrations.
  • Data Accuracy: Ensuring the sensor accurately counts each flush was crucial. After some fine-tuning, the system now reliably tracks usage without missing a beat.

Results and Feedback

The project has been a hit in my household! My family enjoys seeing the daily statistics and friendly reminders about water usage. It’s also become a great way to subtly encourage water conservation.

Why This Project?

I wanted to demonstrate how creative you can get with smart home devices. Even something as simple as a toilet can become a fun and educational project. Plus, it’s a great way to showcase the versatility of Aqara sensors!

Final Thoughts

This DIY project was a delightful way to explore the capabilities of my smart home setup. It’s not just about functionality—it’s about adding a touch of humor and creativity to everyday tasks. If you’re looking for a fun weekend project, I highly recommend giving this a try!
