DIY Water Sensor Project with Xiaomi Aqara Door/Window Sensor

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun DIY project I recently worked on. I’ve been exploring ways to repurpose some of my existing Xiaomi Aqara Zigbee devices to create a custom solution for my home. After some brainstorming, I decided to transform a Xiaomi Aqara door/window sensor into a water sensor! Here’s how I did it:

The Setup

I removed the small glass tube with the magnetic contact from the Aqara sensor and connected a wire to both soldering points. I already had an old 433MHz water sensor that I wasn’t using anymore, so I reused the cable and sensor to connect these to the soldering points of the removed glass tube. The result? A functional Zigbee water sensor!

The Process

  1. Disassembly: Carefully took apart the Aqara sensor to access the internal components.
  2. Wiring: Connected the wires from the old water sensor to the sensor’s soldering points.
  3. Testing: Tested the setup to ensure it worked seamlessly with my existing Zigbee network.

Why This Project?

I’ve been experimenting with various sensors around my home, and having a dedicated water sensor was a priority for me. Since I already had the Xiaomi Aqara ecosystem in place, repurposing one of the sensors made perfect sense. It’s been running smoothly for a few weeks now, and I’m really happy with the results!

Tips for Others

  • Plan Ahead: Make sure you have all the necessary tools and components before starting.
  • Test Thoroughly: After assembly, test each component to ensure everything works as expected.
  • Leverage Existing Ecosystems: If you’re already invested in a particular brand or protocol, look for creative ways to repurpose devices within that ecosystem.

This project was a great way to get more value out of existing hardware and customize my smart home setup. If anyone has similar DIY projects or tips, I’d love to hear about them!
