Dual Setup Success with Homey and openHAB

I’ve been on a bit of a journey trying to integrate my Homey setup with openHAB, and I wanted to share my experience in case anyone else is tackling a similar challenge. For those who might not know, I’ve been using Home Assistant (HA) for years, but after some hardware issues, I made the switch to Homey by Athom. While I love the simplicity and intuitiveness of Homey, I still miss some of the advanced features that HA offers. My goal was to see if I could maintain both systems in a dual setup without any interference, especially since my wife relies heavily on the automations we’ve built.

After some research and experimentation, I found that it’s absolutely possible to run both systems side by side! The key was ensuring that the Z-Wave and Zigbee devices were properly configured in both platforms. I was worried that automations might conflict or stop working, but with careful setup, everything runs smoothly. I even set up some basic rules in Homey that trigger actions in HA through MQTT integration.

One thing I’d recommend to anyone considering a dual setup is to take the time to thoroughly test each automation in both systems before fully committing. It’s also worth setting up a backup plan, just in case. I’ve documented my process in detail and would be happy to share tips or troubleshoot if anyone is interested!

It’s been a fascinating project, and I’m really happy with how it’s turned out. My wife hasn’t noticed any issues, and I’ve even managed to enhance some of our existing automations by combining the strengths of both platforms. If you’re curious about how I set it up or have questions about specific devices, feel free to ask—I’d love to help!
