Hey everyone!
I just wanted to share my exciting experience with setting up smart home automation using the Echo device’s presence detection feature. As a new user to the world of smart homes, I’ve been absolutely thrilled with how seamless and intuitive this setup has been. ![]()
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of having my home adapt to my presence, and the Echo’s presence detection feature has made this a reality. My main goal was to create a system where the lights automatically turn on when I enter a room and switch off when I leave. Sounds simple, but trust me, the satisfaction of walking into a room and having the lights greet you is unbeatable! ![]()
Here’s how I set it up:
-
Understanding Presence Detection: I started by researching how the Echo detects presence. It uses a combination of motion sensors and algorithms to determine if someone is in the room. This was crucial for setting up reliable automation.
-
Configuring the Automation: Using the Alexa app, I created a routine that triggers when the Echo detects my presence. This routine is linked to my smart lights, which are controlled by an Amazon Smart Plug. The setup was surprisingly straightforward!
-
Testing and Tweaking: Initially, I encountered a few hiccups. The lights would sometimes turn off too quickly if I was stationary, or they wouldn’t react if I moved too slowly. After a bit of trial and error, I adjusted the sensitivity settings on the Echo, and everything started working like a charm.

-
The Result: Now, whenever I walk into the room, the lights gently turn on, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. When I leave, they turn off automatically, saving energy and ensuring there’s no wastage. It’s such a small thing, but it’s made a huge difference to my daily life.

I’d love to hear from others who’ve set up similar automations! Do you have any tips or tricks for optimizing presence detection? Have you encountered any unique challenges? Let’s discuss! ![]()
