Managing email notifications from APC devices like Smart-UPS, Rack PDU, and NetBotz Wall Monitor can be a bit overwhelming, especially with a large number of devices spread across multiple sites. After supporting over 850 devices, I’ve learned a few tricks to ensure we stay informed without getting buried in emails.
Here’s what I recommend:
-
Enable Critical and Warning Notifications Only: Informational alerts might seem useful, but they often lead to email overload. Focusing on Critical and Warning ensures we catch actual issues without the noise.
-
Set a Smart Delay: A 5-minute delay before sending notifications helps filter out transient issues. It’s surprising how many problems resolve themselves within this timeframe.
-
Adjust Repeat Intervals: 15 minutes for Critical and 30 minutes for Warning seems to strike the right balance. It keeps us in the loop without constant alerts.
-
Limit Notifications: Capping at 5 notifications after the initial alert prevents endless emails during prolonged issues.
While EcoStruxure IT Data Center Expert (DCE) offers more notification types, managing at the device level has proven simpler and more reliable for our setup. It also avoids the risk of missing notifications during DCE upgrades.
I’d love to hear how others manage their notification systems. Any tips or strategies you’ve found effective? Let’s share and improve together!
