Effective Presence Detection with Beacons

I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home’s presence detection system, and I wanted to share my journey and insights with the community. After experimenting with various methods, including my Nuki system, I discovered that using a beacon-based solution has been a game-changer for me. Here’s how I set it up and the benefits I’ve experienced.

Initially, I tried using my Nuki smart lock to detect when I (and others in my household) were home. While the idea was solid, I ran into a couple of issues. The system was slow to respond, and since I have an older version of Nuki, it only triggered when the door was unlocked, which isn’t my usual routine. I often just open the door without unlocking it, so this approach wasn’t reliable.

After some research, I stumbled upon the idea of using beacons. I decided to go with a beacon that I could attach to my keyring. The setup was straightforward—pair the beacon with my Homey system, and configure it to detect when I’m near. This approach has been much more reliable and instantaneous compared to my previous setup.

One of the best things about this solution is how seamlessly it integrates with other devices in my home. For instance, I’ve set up my Tado thermostat to adjust the temperature based on whether I’m home or away. It’s amazing how such a small device can make such a big difference in the comfort and efficiency of my home.

I’d love to hear from others who have implemented similar solutions or have different approaches to presence detection. What tools or gadgets have you found effective? Are there any challenges or tips you’d like to share? Let’s keep the discussion going and help each other optimize our smart homes!
