I’ve been diving into optimizing my smart home setup, and I wanted to share my journey and some tips that might help others. One of my biggest challenges was managing multiple automations across different rooms. For example, I had separate automations for each room to sync lights with wall switches, which quickly became cumbersome to maintain.
Initially, I had seven almost identical automations, each tailored to a specific room. While they worked, the redundancy was overwhelming. I started researching ways to consolidate these into a single, scalable solution. After some experimentation, I realized the power of using variables and wildcards in my automations. This approach allowed me to create a universal automation that works across all rooms without needing separate configurations for each space.
For instance, I set up an automation that dynamically references the room name as a variable. This way, I only need to adjust the variable when adding a new room, rather than duplicating the entire automation. It’s been a game-changer for reducing maintenance and keeping my setup clean.
