Efficient Garage Cooling System with Smart Temperature Monitoring

I’ve been working on a project to cool my garage more efficiently during the summer, and I’d love to share my approach and experiences with the community. The goal is to reduce the heat buildup in the garage, which in turn helps keep the connected parts of the house cooler and saves on AC costs. Here’s how I’m tackling it:

The Plan

  1. Ventilation System: I’m installing vents on both sides of the garage—one for hot air to escape and another for cooler air to enter. I’ll use a squirrel-cage fan to push the hot air out. I’m still researching the best fan options, so any recommendations would be appreciated!

  2. Smart Temperature Monitoring: I’ll use two smart temperature sensors—one inside the garage near the hot air vent and one outside near the cooler air intake. The idea is to have the fan turn on automatically when the outside temperature is cooler than the inside. I’m considering using battery-powered sensors for the outside unit since it’s partially exposed to the elements.

  3. Smart Power Outlet: I need a smart outlet to control the fan. It should integrate with my STv1 hub and ideally have some scheduling or automation capabilities.

Challenges and Questions

  • Fan Selection: What factors should I consider when choosing a fan? Power requirements, airflow capacity, noise levels—any advice here would be super helpful!
  • Sensor Recommendations: Are there specific brands or models that are reliable for this kind of outdoor use? I’d prefer something that doesn’t require frequent battery changes.
  • Automation Setup: I’m not entirely sure how to set up the automation rules for this system. I remember seeing a SmartApp for attic fans, but I’m not sure if it can be adapted for my garage setup. Any pointers or suggestions would be great!

Potential Enhancements
I’m also thinking about adding insulation to the garage door, walls, and ceiling to complement the ventilation system. This should help keep the cool air in and the hot air out more effectively.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, or experiences with similar projects! Whether it’s about hardware choices, automation tips, or potential pitfalls to avoid, your insights are invaluable. Let’s work together to make this project a success!
