I recently undertook a project to install a landscape lighting system in my woodland property, aiming for a balance between aesthetics and functionality. The challenge was to control multiple zones of LED path lights and spotlights using a low-voltage 12VAC system. The Setup My property spans several acres, with different areas requiring independent lighting control. I opted for an RF relay system due to its cost-effectiveness and ease of installation. The system includes a Broadlink Pro hub, which integrates seamlessly with my existing smart home setup, allowing me to control each zone via Alexa. Why RF Relays? I considered Z-Wave relays but found them prohibitively expensive for multiple channels. RF relays, on the other hand, offered a more budget-friendly solution. I chose the eMylo 6-channel RF relay switch, which has proven reliable and weather-resistant when housed in an outdoor-rated junction box. Installation Tips - Wiring: I used 12VAC wiring from the transformer to each relay, ensuring all connections were secure and waterproof. - Placement: Positioning the relays near the landscape transformer simplified the wiring process and minimized signal interference. - Testing: Before final installation, I tested each relay to ensure it responded correctly to the remote controls. Integration with Smart Home The Broadlink hub allowed me to program each relay channel to correspond with specific zones. I set up voice commands for convenience, enabling me to turn on or off specific areas with a simple voice instruction. Challenges and Solutions Initially, I encountered some signal issues due to the dense tree cover. I resolved this by strategically placing additional RF repeaters around the property.
