Efficient Window Status Monitoring in Smart Homes

I’m absolutely thrilled with how my smart home setup has transformed my daily life, but I’ve come across a challenge that I’d love to get some advice on. I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to monitor the status of multiple windows across my house, specifically whether they’re open or closed. This has become increasingly important as I’ve been working on optimizing my home security and energy efficiency.

Let me share a bit about my current setup. I’ve got 18 windows throughout my home, each equipped with smart sensors that detect their status. My goal is to create a system that can check all these windows at once and trigger specific actions based on their states. For example, if any window is left open, I want to receive a notification on my phone, and if multiple windows are open for an extended period, I’d like the system to automatically adjust the thermostat or activate the security cameras.

Initially, I tried setting up individual rules for each window, but this approach quickly became unwieldy. Managing 18 separate rules was not only time-consuming but also inefficient, especially when I wanted to make changes or add new automations. I then explored using a virtual switch as a helper, which worked to some extent but introduced new issues, such as accidental toggling of the switch, which could lead to false triggers.

I stumbled upon the idea of using a sensor group, which seemed promising. By configuring the group to activate if any member sensor detects an open window, I could centralize the monitoring. However, this solution doesn’t allow for more nuanced scenarios, like excluding a specific window or incorporating other data points, such as temperature readings. This limitation has left me searching for a more elegant and flexible approach.

I’d love to hear from the community—what methods have you found effective for monitoring multiple devices or sensors? Are there any advanced techniques or tools within the platform that I might be overlooking? I’m particularly interested in solutions that offer scalability and ease of management, as my smart home continues to grow.

Thank you in advance for your insights and suggestions. I’m really looking forward to exploring these possibilities and finding a solution that not only works well but also aligns with the seamless integration I’ve come to expect from my smart home setup.
