EISY - Seamless Integration with Zigbee Hue Bulbs: My Experience

Recently, I upgraded my smart home system to the EISY platform and decided to branch out from my primarily Insteon setup by incorporating some Zigbee Hue bulbs. I wanted to explore how well EISY would work with these bulbs, especially since I hadn’t seen much discussion about this combination in the forums. Here’s what I discovered!

The Setup

I started by using the Zigbee/USB dongle that came with my EISY system. The process was surprisingly smooth. After powering up the bulbs, I simply clicked on “Add a Zigbee Device,” and all three bulbs appeared as devices in my system. It was a pleasant surprise how straightforward this was, especially considering all the technical jargon I’d encountered in other forums about PolyGot and node servers.

Color Customization

The Hue bulbs offer two ways to set colors: HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) and xyY. While I struggled a bit with the xyY mode, the HSL method was user-friendly. I found a great color picker tool online that helped me visualize and select the perfect hues for my space. For example, I set up a cozy yellow light using the HSL picker and it made my living room feel warm and inviting.

No Hot Socket Hassle

One concern I had was maintaining the bulb settings without keeping the socket “hot.” I was thrilled to find that I could integrate the Insteon switches with the Hue bulbs seamlessly. By setting up a scene where the bulb defaults to a pale white and then transitions to the desired color when the switch is flipped, I eliminated the need for a hot socket. This setup worked flawlessly, and I could control everything through my existing Insteon switches.

Programmatic Color Changes

To add more flexibility, I created a series of programs for different colors. Each program adjusts the Hue-Sat values in the scene, allowing me to switch colors effortlessly. I even set up voice commands through Alexa to trigger these programs, making it a breeze to change the ambiance of my room with just a spoken word.

Final Thoughts

Overall, my experience with EISY and Zigbee Hue bulbs has been nothing short of fantastic. The integration was seamless, and the ability to use both Insteon switches and Zigbee bulbs without any conflicts is a huge plus. If you’re considering expanding your smart home setup, I highly recommend exploring this combination. It’s been a game-changer for my home automation journey!
