Hello everyone! I’ve been diving into optimizing my smart home setup and wanted to share some insights and questions I’ve come across. Hopefully, this can help others and spark some discussions!
Energy Cost Tracking with Changing Rates
One challenge I’ve been tackling is tracking daily energy costs accurately. My energy provider, Tibber, offers dynamic pricing that changes hourly, which complicates things. I’ve been using Node-RED to monitor my energy usage and costs, but I’m struggling with how to account for the fluctuating rates. My current setup has an entity for the hourly price and another for kWh usage, but calculating the daily cost with varying rates seems tricky. Has anyone found a reliable way to track this? I’d love to display this information neatly on my dashboard for better financial planning.
Device Naming and Customization
Another area I’ve been exploring is customizing device names for better organization. I renamed all my router-connected devices to something meaningful, but after a Home Assistant reboot, these changes didn’t carry over. It seems like some devices don’t have customizable IDs, making it harder to maintain consistency. I’d appreciate any tips on how to ensure these name changes persist or workarounds to achieve similar organization.
Xiaomi Aqara Relay Configuration
I recently acquired a Xiaomi Aqara 2-channel relay and noticed it’s categorized under the light domain by default. I’d prefer to use it as a switch for more versatile control. Is there a way to change its domain within Home Assistant? I’ve looked into the configuration options but haven’t found a straightforward method yet.
Smart Lighting Automation
On a lighter note, I’ve been experimenting with smart lighting automation using Zigbee bulbs and Sengled outlets. Setting up routines based on motion sensors and time schedules has been a breeze, but I’m curious about more advanced scenarios. For instance, how can I ensure consistent responsiveness across all devices, especially after reboots? I’ve had some devices take longer to react, which disrupts the seamless experience I’m aiming for.
Zigbee Network Optimization
Lastly, I’ve been working on expanding my Zigbee network. Adding new routers to strengthen the mesh has been effective, but I’m still figuring out the best practices for integrating them without disrupting existing end devices. Any recommendations on maintaining a robust network as it grows would be invaluable!
I’m really enjoying the journey of customizing my smart home, and I’m excited to learn more from the community. Let’s keep the ideas flowing! ![]()
