Energy Monitoring Automation: Manual Data Entry to Smart Calculation

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my journey and seek some advice on optimizing my energy monitoring setup. I’ve been manually recording my electricity consumption from the meter in the basement, but I’m looking to automate this process using Home Assistant. Here’s my current setup and the challenges I’m facing:

I have several smart switches that track energy usage for specific appliances, but my main electricity meter isn’t smart. My plan is to manually input the meter readings at regular intervals (e.g., every few days) and then subtract the energy consumption already tracked by my smart switches. This would give me an estimate of the energy used by devices that aren’t directly monitored.

For example, if my meter shows a total consumption of 40 kWh over a period and my smart switches report 20 kWh, I’d assume the remaining 20 kWh is from other sources. I’d like to automatically calculate and display this difference in my energy dashboard. However, I’m not sure how to set up this calculation in Home Assistant. Any suggestions or tips on how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated!

I’m also curious if others have implemented similar solutions or if there’s a more efficient way to approach this. Let me know your thoughts or if you’ve encountered a similar challenge!

Cheers,
