Hey everyone!
I wanted to share my recent experience setting up energy monitoring in Home Assistant. It’s been a fantastic journey, and I hope my insights can help others who are considering diving into energy tracking too! ![]()
I started with a simple goal: to keep tabs on my energy consumption and see if I could reduce my bills. I’ve heard great things about Home Assistant’s flexibility, so I decided to give it a try. The setup process was surprisingly smooth, especially with the influx of smart plugs and sensors available today. ![]()

One of the first things I did was integrate my smart meter data. I was a bit nervous about it, but the community resources and tutorials made it a breeze. I used the sma_sh integration for my solar panels and paired it with an influxdb setup to log everything neatly. Now, I have a clear dashboard showing my daily, weekly, and monthly energy usage. It’s incredibly satisfying to see the data flow in real-time! ![]()

I also experimented with the powercalc integration to estimate the energy consumption of my appliances. It’s been a revelation! For instance, I discovered that my old refrigerator was a real energy hog. Thanks to this, I’ve now prioritized upgrading to a more efficient model. ![]()

Another highlight was setting up a simple automation to turn off lights and appliances during the day when they’re not needed. It’s such a small change, but the impact on my energy bill has been noticeable. ![]()
