Enhancing Home Security with Randomized Lighting Automation

As a homeowner, I’ve always been on the lookout for innovative ways to enhance my home’s security. One idea that’s been floating around in my mind is using randomized lighting to deter potential intruders. The concept is simple yet effective: between 10PM and 2AM, lights would randomly turn on and off, creating the illusion that someone is awake and active inside.

I stumbled upon the Hue app’s random time feature, which only randomizes when the lights come on but leaves them on, which isn’t quite what I need. I’d love to see an option where lights not only come on at random times but also switch off multiple times within the set period. This would make the presence simulation much more convincing.

In Home Assistant, I’ve been exploring how to set this up using automations. I’ve considered using a combination of time-based triggers and random delay actions. For instance, every 15 minutes between 10PM and 2AM, a light or group of lights could turn on for a random duration between 10 to 30 seconds before turning off again. This variability would make it harder for potential intruders to discern a pattern.

I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on this idea. Have you implemented something similar? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them? I’m particularly interested in learning about any clever automation setups or integrations that could enhance this system further. Let’s brainstorm together and make our homes safer with the help of smart technology!
