Enhancing Home Security with Smart Cameras and NVR

Recently, I embarked on a journey to enhance the security of my gated front garden. After some research, I decided to install smart cameras with an NVR system, opting for POE cameras for their reliability. My primary goal was to ensure that the system could operate without relying heavily on an internet connection, especially since my parents are getting older and we have some security concerns.

The setup includes three main components: security lighting, an audible chime, and notifications on family members’ mobiles. I wanted the system to be robust yet not overly dependent on the internet. While the NVR records and saves footage to the cloud, I understand that some functionalities will inevitably require an internet connection.

However, I encountered a few challenges along the way. One issue was a certificate error after updating the core/OS, which prevented me from connecting to Nabu Casa. After some troubleshooting, I managed to resolve it, but it highlighted the importance of regular updates and backups.

Another concern was the notification sounds. I found the Woody Woodpecker sound for camera events to be quite annoying. I’m hoping for more options in the future to customize these alerts.

Despite these minor hiccups, the system has been performing exceptionally well. It provides peace of mind, especially knowing that my parents are safe. I would love to hear from others who have implemented similar systems—what worked for you, and any tips or tricks you might have? Let’s continue to share our experiences and learn from each other!
