Enhancing Home Security with WyzeCam and IFTTT

I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home security system, and I stumbled upon an interesting solution using WyzeCam and IFTTT. Let me share my journey and some tips I’ve gathered along the way!

The Goal:
I wanted my living room WyzeCam to automatically turn on only when both my wife and I are away from home. It shouldn’t activate if either of us is still inside, unless we manually turn it on. This would save energy and ensure privacy while providing an extra layer of security when we’re out.

The Setup:
After some research, I found that integrating WyzeCam with IFTTT and Life360 could achieve this. Here’s how it works:

  1. Life360 Integration: I set up Life360 accounts for both of us. This app tracks our locations in real-time, which is crucial for determining when we’re both away.
  2. IFTTT Automation: I created an IFTTT applet that monitors our Life360 locations. When both of our devices show we’re outside the home perimeter, the applet triggers the WyzeCam to turn on.
  3. WyzeCam Configuration: I ensured the WyzeCam was properly set up and connected to my network. The camera automatically sends notifications to my phone when motion is detected, adding an extra layer of security.

Challenges and Solutions:
Initially, I faced some issues with the IFTTT applet not triggering consistently. After some troubleshooting, I realized the geofencing settings in Life360 needed adjustment. I also had to ensure that both of our phones had location services enabled and were sharing our locations with each other.

Tips for Others:

  • Test Geofencing: Before relying on the system, test the geofencing by moving away from home and see if the applet triggers correctly.
  • Check Battery Levels: Ensure that both phones have sufficient battery life to maintain the geofencing without interruptions.
  • Regular Updates: Keep both the Life360 and WyzeCam apps updated to the latest versions to avoid compatibility issues.

Conclusion:
This setup has been a game-changer for me. It provides peace of mind knowing that our home is secure when we’re away, without compromising on privacy or energy usage. If you’re looking to integrate smart cameras with location-based automation, I highly recommend exploring this setup!
