Enhancing Outdoor Lighting Automation with SmartThings

As a homeowner who values convenience and energy efficiency, I’ve been relying on the Smart Lighting app to manage my outdoor lights. The automation setup was seamless—turning on an hour after sunset and off an hour before sunrise. It worked flawlessly with the Classic SmartThings app, providing consistent performance. However, everything changed when I upgraded to the new SmartThings app.

To my dismay, my lights now switch off precisely at midnight, regardless of the sunset or sunrise times. This unexpected behavior has been quite perplexing. I’ve spent considerable time troubleshooting, checking the automation settings, and reviewing the app’s history, but it simply logs the lights as ‘OFF’ without further details. This inconsistency has been frustrating, especially as I’m planning to integrate a Ring doorbell, which relies on consistent outdoor lighting for security.

I’ve reached out to the SmartThings community for advice and discovered that compatibility issues between the Smart Lighting app and the new SmartThings app might be the culprit. Some users have suggested exploring alternative apps like IFTTT or adjusting the automation settings manually. I’ve also considered reaching out to Ring support to ensure compatibility with my doorbell installation.

After some research and trial and error, I found that adjusting the automation timing and using a combination of settings within the new SmartThings app has helped mitigate the issue. It’s a bit of a workaround, but it’s keeping my lights on when they’re needed most. I’m hopeful that future updates will resolve these inconsistencies and provide a more seamless experience.

This journey has taught me the importance of community support and the value of persistence when troubleshooting smart home setups. I’m eager to hear from others who’ve faced similar challenges and how they’ve overcome them. Let’s keep the conversation going and continue to enhance our smart home experiences together!
