I’ve been exploring ways to enhance my home security system using SmartThings, and I came across an interesting challenge that I wanted to share with the community. How can I set up a motion sensor to be armed specifically in ‘Stay’ mode while still being able to bypass it when I’m moving around the house?
For those unfamiliar, SmartThings offers two primary modes: ‘Away’ and ‘Stay’. The ‘Away’ mode is perfect when you’re out of the house, as it arms all your security devices. However, the ‘Stay’ mode is more flexible, allowing you to arm certain devices while leaving others disarmed for convenience. My goal was to have my basement motion sensor active in ‘Stay’ mode but easily bypassable when I’m moving through the house.
After some research and experimentation, I discovered that SmartThings allows you to arm individual devices within the ‘Stay’ mode. This means I can have my basement motion sensor active without affecting other devices. Here’s how I did it:
- Access the SmartThings App: Open the app and navigate to the security settings.
- Select ‘Stay’ Mode: Choose the ‘Stay’ mode and customize which devices you want to arm.
- Enable Motion Sensor: Specifically enable the basement motion sensor within the ‘Stay’ mode settings.
- Test the Setup: Move around the house to ensure the sensor only triggers when you want it to.
This setup has been incredibly useful, especially during late-night trips to the basement. It gives me peace of mind without the hassle of constant false alarms.
I’d love to hear if others have implemented similar solutions or have tips for optimizing motion sensor usage in ‘Stay’ mode. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other enhance our smart home security setups!
