I recently came across an interesting modification that significantly improved the functionality of my Wyze camera, and I wanted to share my experience with the community. The goal was to enable the camera to zoom in enough to read license plates during the daytime, which could be invaluable for security purposes.
The process involved replacing the original lens with a 25mm M12 lens, which I sourced from Amazon. I must emphasize the importance of configuring the camera before disassembling it. Once everything was set up and working, I carefully disassembled the camera, replaced the lens, and reassembled it. The new lens protrudes slightly, allowing manual focusing, and it maintains the camera’s motion detection and automation capabilities.
While this modification works exceptionally well during the day, it doesn’t function as effectively at night due to the challenges posed by vehicle lights and shutter speed. The camera is currently protected by an outdoor cover, but the lens area remains exposed. So far, it has withstood light rain without issues, though I haven’t tested it in extreme weather conditions.
This project was a rewarding DIY experience, and I hope it might inspire others looking to enhance their home security systems. If anyone has questions or suggestions, I’d be happy to discuss further!
