Enhancing Smart Home Automation with Area Management and Drag-and-Drop

As a long-time user of Home Assistant, I’ve always been impressed by its flexibility and the endless possibilities it offers for customizing my smart home setup. However, one area that has consistently piqued my curiosity is the management of areas, devices, and entities. The current setup, while functional, feels a bit clunky, especially when dealing with multiple devices spread across different floors of my home.

That’s why I’m thrilled to see discussions about the potential introduction of an “Area Manager” section in the Home Assistant UI. The idea of being able to drag and drop devices and entities into specific areas, or even moving entire areas between floors, sounds like a game-changer. Imagine being able to visually organize your smart home in a tree structure, where floors branch into areas, and areas contain devices and entities. This would not only make management faster and more intuitive but also provide a clearer overview of the entire system.

One use case that excites me is the ability to quickly assign multiple new devices to the correct areas without manually selecting each one from a dropdown menu. Additionally, the option to restructure areas when my home layout changes would save countless hours of reconfiguration. For example, if I decide to convert my garage into a basement workshop, I could simply drag the “Garage” area to the basement floor in a few easy steps.

I’d love to see this feature come to life, complete with a visual hierarchy, search and filter options, and even an optional floor view for a top-down representation. It would make Home Assistant even more accessible to new users while providing seasoned users like myself with a powerful tool to streamline their setups.

What are your thoughts on an “Area Manager” with drag-and-drop functionality? Would this solve some of the challenges you face in organizing your smart home? I’d love to hear your ideas and experiences in the comments below!
