Enhancing Smart Home Automation with Variable Selection and Structured Data Handling

Hi everyone! I’ve been diving into optimizing my smart home setup, and I wanted to share some insights and experiences that might help others facing similar challenges.

One area I’ve been focusing on is improving the variable selection process in my automation scripts. I’ve noticed that having a more intuitive way to search and filter variables, similar to how it’s done in other software like Machine Expert, would save a lot of time. Currently, I often find myself manually dragging variables from the data editor, which can be cumbersome, especially on smaller screens. I’d love to see a feature where suggestions appear as I start typing, without needing to click additional buttons. This would make workflows much smoother, especially when dealing with complex structures like DDTs.

Another challenge I’ve encountered is handling variables within nested structures. It’s frustrating when the search functionality doesn’t drill down into these structures, making it hard to find exactly what I need. I’ve tried using wildcards and different filters, but it hasn’t been as effective as I hoped. I wonder if others have found workarounds or if there are upcoming updates that might address this.

On a more positive note, I’ve been experimenting with integrating ESP8266 devices into my setup, particularly for environmental monitoring. It’s been a great learning experience, and I’ve managed to create a simple yet effective weather station. Using MQTT to communicate with my OpenHab instance has been seamless, and the ability to adjust thresholds software-based has been a huge plus. It’s rewarding to see how even basic hardware can be repurposed to meet specific needs.

I’d love to hear from others about their experiences with variable management and automation optimization. Have you found any tricks or tools that make the process easier? Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other improve our smart home setups!
