I recently embarked on a project to upgrade my home’s lighting system, and I must say, it’s been an enlightening experience! 
As part of a house extension, I decided to integrate smart lighting controls, and after some research, I settled on Zigbee devices due to their reliability and seamless integration with my existing setup.
One of the key decisions I made was opting for Zigbee switches, specifically ones that are certified for use in the UK. I was thrilled to find options that not only fit within my budget but also offered the flexibility I needed. The idea of having a double box for each light switch was intriguing—it allows me to potentially add sensors or other smart devices in the future without cluttering the space. While I’m not entirely sure how aesthetically pleasing this will look, the functionality it promises is hard to ignore! 
During the installation process, I encountered a few hurdles, primarily related to wiring and ensuring that all devices were correctly paired with my Zigbee2MQTT setup. However, the community support on forums like this has been invaluable. Tips from experienced users helped me troubleshoot issues and optimize my setup. For instance, adjusting the depth limit in Rules API was a lifesaver when dealing with nested automation logic, preventing server overloads while maintaining efficiency.
Another aspect I’ve been exploring is the integration of Cat5/6 cables to each lighting socket. This paves the way for future expansions, such as adding POE sensors or even smart cameras. The thought of having a fully connected and automated home is both exciting and a bit overwhelming, but taking it one step at a time keeps me on track.
I’ve also been experimenting with dynamic lighting scenarios using Home Assistant. Setting up automations that adjust brightness based on time of day or occupancy has made a significant difference in both convenience and energy efficiency. It’s satisfying to see how technology can enhance daily routines without feeling intrusive.
As I continue this journey, I’m constantly reminded of the importance of planning and adaptability. What started as a simple rewiring project has evolved into a comprehensive smart home overhaul, and I’m loving every bit of it!
