Expanding Smart Home: Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi?

As I’ve been diving deeper into the world of smart home automation, I’ve found myself at a crossroads when it comes to expanding my system. I currently have a mix of Ikea Tradfri and Philips Hue lighting, along with some Shelly devices, all managed through my Homey. However, as I look to add more sensors like door contacts and temperature monitors, I’m faced with the decision of which wireless protocol to go with—Z-Wave, Zigbee, or Wi-Fi.

I’ve read that Z-Wave is known for its reliability and strong range, which sounds perfect for my setup. Zigbee, on the other hand, seems a bit hit or miss with coverage, though it’s widely supported by many devices. Wi-Fi is already my go-to for most gadgets, but I’m concerned about its reliability during power outages or network issues.

For door contacts, I’ve heard great things about Aqara, but their Zigbee range can be tricky without the right routers. Shelly does offer a Wi-Fi contact, but it’s quite bulky. Temperature sensors seem to follow a similar pattern, depending heavily on the protocol chosen.

I’m also considering adding some relay points to ensure coverage throughout my home. I’ve seen setups with up to 8 of these points, which is both impressive and a bit daunting in terms of cost.

If anyone has experience with these protocols and the sensors they’ve paired them with, I’d love to hear your insights! Whether it’s advice on specific devices, protocol recommendations, or tips for setting up a robust mesh network, I’m all ears. Let’s make my smart home expansion as seamless as possible! :rocket:
