I recently stumbled upon a fantastic way to integrate my Tuya devices more effectively into my home automation setup, and I wanted to share my experience with the community. While Tuya’s official documentation lists several supported entity types, it wasn’t immediately clear how to extend this support to a wider range of devices—until I discovered the power of Tuya Scenes!
My Journey with Tuya Scenes
I own a Tuya pet feeder that I wanted to control through Home Assistant. Initially, it wasn’t supported out of the box, but here’s how I made it work:
- Add the device to the Smart Life app.
- Navigate to the Smart menu, then Tap-to-Run, and select “+” to create a new scene.
- Choose “Run the device” and select your unsupported device.
- Select the desired function (in my case, Feed) and set any necessary parameters (like portion size).
- The scene will appear in the Smart Life app, albeit with some Chinese text in the name.
- Set up the Tuya integration in Home Assistant, ensuring your Tuya password contains only letters and numbers.
- Voilà! The scene appears in Home Assistant, ready to be renamed, added to Alexa, and controlled via Google Home.
Beyond the Pet Feeder
The scene creation in the Tuya app offers even more possibilities. While my example focused on the pet feeder, I can see how time-based triggers and other settings could be utilized for various devices. This method has been a game-changer for me, allowing me to integrate a wider array of smart devices seamlessly.
If you’re looking to expand your Tuya integration without upgrading hardware, I highly recommend exploring this approach. It’s a clever workaround that unlocks a lot of potential! ![]()
