Hi everyone! I wanted to share my exciting journey into DIY smart home automation. After years of being fascinated by the potential of home automation, I decided to take the plunge and create my own solutions instead of relying on expensive off-the-shelf products. My goal was to find affordable, customizable alternatives that could integrate seamlessly with my existing smart home ecosystem.
One of my most rewarding projects has been automating my window blinds. I was initially deterred by the high cost of commercial solutions, which often came with subpar build quality. Instead, I turned to 3D printing and basic electronics to create a system that not only fits my budget but also allows for endless customization. I designed a mechanism that uses a 9g servo motor to control the tilt of my Venetian blinds, all while keeping the manual operation intact for convenience.
The process wasn’t without its challenges. My first few prototypes lacked the necessary torque to smoothly operate the blinds, and I had to experiment with different gear designs until I found a solution that worked. The breakthrough came when I integrated a potentiometer to act as an encoder, simplifying the software logic and ensuring precise control. This design also allowed me to retain the original manual mechanism, which was a top priority for me.
To bring it all together, I used Home Assistant to create custom automations. For example, I set up a routine that adjusts the blinds based on the time of day and the current weather conditions. This integration has been a game-changer, as it not only enhances my daily comfort but also reduces energy consumption by optimizing natural light.
