Exploring Alternatives for Ecobee Automation Post Groovy/Webcore Retirement

As the smart home ecosystem evolves, many of us are facing the challenge of adapting to the retirement of beloved tools like Groovy and Webcore. For those relying on these platforms for Ecobee thermostat automation, the transition can feel daunting. I’ve been exploring solutions to maintain the seamless automation I’ve grown accustomed to, and I’d love to share my journey and insights with the community.

Currently, I use a combination of Yves DTH and Webcore to manage two Ecobee V3 thermostats and three external sensors. My setup includes a 12-piston system that handles everything from HVAC controls to notifications. However, with the end of Groovy in sight, I need to find new ways to keep my system running smoothly.

One approach I’ve considered is leveraging built-in Ecobee automation features. This would allow me to maintain the vacant offset and fan cycle settings without relying on external scripts. However, my priority remains the home/away functionality, which I want to control via the Google Home app without adding another app to monitor location data.

I’ve also looked into using IFTTT, SharpTools, and Alexa as potential replacements. While IFTTT offers some flexibility, it seems limited by the functions exposed by the stock SmartThings-Ecobee integration, particularly around hold until settings. This limitation is a hurdle I need to overcome.

Another challenge is managing the integration between the SmartThings cloud link for Ecobee sensors and the Yves DTH for thermostats. I’m still figuring out how these devices communicate and how to ensure they work seamlessly in the new setup.

I’d love to hear from others who have successfully transitioned away from Groovy and Webcore. What solutions have you found? Are there any tools or techniques that have made the process smoother? I’m particularly interested in strategies for maintaining location-based automation without adding unnecessary complexity.

Let’s collaborate to find innovative solutions that keep our smart homes running efficiently and intelligently. Whether it’s through built-in Ecobee features, third-party apps, or creative scripting, together we can adapt to these changes and continue to enhance our smart home experiences.
