I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I must say, it’s been an exciting journey! One of the challenges I’ve encountered is getting the most out of my devices, especially when they have multiple functionalities. Let me share my experience and a question that’s been on my mind.
I recently purchased a Lowe’s door sensor that also includes a temperature sensor. Adding it as a generic Zigbee device was straightforward, and it shows up as a door sensor, which works perfectly for my needs. However, I’ve been itching to also access the temperature readings from the same device. After some research and tinkering, I realized that the device type plays a crucial role here. For urn:schemas-micasaverde-com:device:DoorSensor:1, it functions and displays as a door sensor, and for urn:schemas-micasaverde-com:device:TemperatureSensor:1, it acts as a temperature sensor.
This led me to wonder: Is there a way to clone the device in Vera so that I can have both virtual devices pointing to the same physical device but with different device types? The idea is to have one virtual device for the door sensor and another for the temperature sensor, both linked to the same physical unit. I’m curious if this is feasible or if there’s a better approach to achieve this dual functionality.
I’ve explored the Vera interface and some online forums, but I haven’t found a clear solution yet. If anyone has experience with device cloning or has successfully set up a similar setup, I’d love to hear your insights! Whether it’s through Vera’s built-in features or third-party tools, I’m open to any suggestions. Let’s brainstorm together and see if we can unlock the full potential of this device!
Cheers to the smart home community for all the incredible knowledge and support! ![]()
